Whitworth has replaced the gas powered balanced forklift operated at its Northamptonshire production and storage facility with a Toyota series of lithium-ion machines. Each machine in the new fleet is powered by the latest lithium battery technology. Jeff Morley, Toyota's key account manager, commented: "the intensification of environmental problems, the rise of fuel prices and the improvement of employee welfare awareness have led to the decline of LPG forklift sales, while the demand for lithium forklifts has been on a continuous upward curve for some time. In fact, nearly a quarter of all Toyota electric forklifts ordered in the UK now use lithium battery technology."
The shift from gasoline to lithium power balanced forklifts has brought significant productivity gains to Whitworth, in part because it eliminates the time-consuming process of refilling cylinders. Jim rattan, Whitworth outbound front manager, explained: "our old LPG counterweight forklift must be filled up at least once per shift, which means that the forklift downtime is 15 minutes each time it needs refueling." Lithium batteries improve the availability of forklifts throughout the fleet, which means that all forklifts in Whitworth can be charged anywhere in the company during shift breaks or other operator downtime.
All forklifts in Whitworth's new fleet are also equipped with Toyota's isite integrated telematics system. Toyota's warehouse trucks are equipped with isite in the factory, and three kinds of packaging can be selected to meet the specific needs of users to optimize the performance of forklift fleets of all sizes and types.
Morley said: "we are very happy to cooperate with Whitworth's material handling fleet. We started discussions about 18 months before the expiration of the contract with their previous suppliers. After listening to their needs, we believe that switching to lithium battery power supply will bring real operational benefits to the company, which has proved to be correct.
