Super Shovel Once Appeared In History

Jul 12, 2018

Fierce business competition among machinery manufacturers prompted the American shovel "swing arm and crossbar mine" in the 50-70 century. Marion and Bucyrus, the two mining machinery giants, are competing to create some of the world's largest electric shovels in order to show their respective technological strength. Even today, companies are dwarfed by the size of their models and the size of these super giants. "MARION Mountaineer" is one of them.

It is the first super electric shovel manufactured by Marion company. Its manufacturing time is 1955-1956 years, and it belongs to 5760 series 名媛直播. The user is the Hanna branch of Consolidated coal company. How do you describe such a machine? It has 16 stories as high as 2497 tons, 46 meters in length, and a giant bucket of 50 cubic meters, one at one time and 100 tons of earth and stone, and can be dump them out of a material heap outside a football field. Its walking mechanism consists of 4 groups of 8 crawlers, with 4 lifting motors, 2 walking motors and 4 rotary motors. Mountaineer was put into operation in 1956 until 1979, and it ran for 23 years, and finally dismantled and dismantled at St. Clairsville, Ohio in 1988.

In early 60s, the Loews Corp launched two 3850B electric shovels, all owned by Peabody (Peabody) coal company. Peabody was founded in 1883 and merged with the world's third largest coal company, Hinckley M, in 1955 to become the world's largest coal producer. The first 3850B shovel was built in 1962, and Peabody bought the Sinclair open pit mine in Western Kentucky, nicknamed "Big Hog". The capacity of the bucket is 88 cubic meters, the length of the main arm is 64 meters, the total height is 67 meters, the working weight is 8165 tons, the total power reaches 12180 horsepower (8950 kW), the input voltage is 7200 volts, and the cycle of each work is 1 minutes. Its main task is to peel off the overlay of the coal mine, and by virtue of its amazing performance, it can dig out 76460 cubic meters of earth and stone every day, and the annual mining amount is up to 27 million 530 thousand cubic meters. "Big Hog" was the largest excavator in the world at that time, with 4 times the size of its kind, and 300 vehicles were used to transport its parts from the factory to the mine for 11 months. Its chassis is a walking mechanism consisting of 4 groups of 8 crawlers. The whole machine is equipped with 52 motors, with power ranging from 0.25 to 3000 horsepower, and the power consumption is very alarming. It worked until 1985 to die, and the components were retained as spare parts for its brother model "River King".

The second 3850B type electric shovel came out in 1964. It has a loud name -- River King (meaning River King). Peabody used it in the River King open-pit mine in Southern Illinois. The giant beast waving a bucket with a bucket length of 61 meters and a capacity of 107 cubic meters. The diameter of the hollow bucket rod is 2.14 meters, and a bucket can dig up to more than 200 tons of earth and stone. The work weight is up to 8482 tons, and on the top of it, there are living facilities such as kitchens for operators. It operates at a very fast speed, 0-40km/h's rotation acceleration is 8 seconds, and then decelerates to 4 seconds at rest. A day's digging capacity can fill 1700 trains, and it's 25 kilometers in length. Its annual mining measure can reach 27 million 530 thousand cubic meters, equivalent to digging a 6.1 meter wide, 1.5 meters deep, from Chicago to San Francisco grooves, the two cities are 3000 kilometers away! River King ceased operation in 1992 and was scrapped and dismantled in 1993. During its operation, it dug itself more than 30 kilometers long road in the mining area, and removed 558922600 cubic meters of earth and stone, equivalent to digging two the Panama Canal. River King can be said to represent one of the top achievements of the company, and its product line has not yet produced its right person (size / weight / excavating volume).  However, due to the emergence of Marion 6360, it can only take the place of the second largest electric shovel in the world.

Marion 6360, a giant electric shovel made by Marion in 1965, was used to peel off mine cover in the Captain open mine of the Illinois coal company in the southwest of the United States. The Big Mac weighs over 13600 tons, which cost more than 15 million dollars at the time, and it took about two years to assemble it. After removing the boom, the main room width is 39.9 meters, and the height is 64.5 meters. The area is equivalent to three basketball courts, and the height is equivalent to 22 floors. The walking device consists of 4 groups of 8 crawlers, each track 13.7 meters long and 4.9 meters high, equivalent to a double decker bus. The total power is up to 21300 horsepower (15655 kilowatts), using 7000V high voltage electricity. The length of the boom is 70.5 meters, and the bucket capacity is 138 cubic meters, which is enough to install six family cars. The maximum excavation height is 67.2 meters, and the annual theoretical excavation volume is 41 million 300 thousand cubic meters. This is the largest single bucket electric shovel in the world so far. Unfortunately, the super shovel was destroyed by a fire in 1991, and it failed to repair for 2 million 200 thousand US dollars and was eventually dismantled in 1992. In his lifetime, he has excavated 620000000 cubic meters of earth and stone, enough to build three the Great Wall.

Marion 5960 is the second largest stripping shovel produced by Marion company, which was built in 1969. Peabody Coal Company bought the River Queen open-pit mine in Kentucky, nicknamed "BIG DIGGER". 5960 use Marion company's patented elbow type bucket propulsion mechanism. Its working weight is 8471 tons, the length of the boom is 66 meters, the length of the bucket bar is 40 meters, and the bucket capacity is 96 cubic meters. In 1982 alone, 25 million 630 thousand cubic meters of earth and stone were excavated. After nearly 20 years of operation, it was scrapped and dismantled in 1989. Its bucket capacity ranks fourth in the world, and the weight of the whole machine ranks third in the world, which is only 11 tons less than that of second River King.

A total of 2 units were built in the 1950B type shovel. The first nickname Silver Spade (silver shovel) was built in 1965. Its working weight is 6350 tons, the input voltage is 7200V, and the total power is 13700 horsepower (10070 kilowatts). The hanging arm is 61 meters long and the bucket capacity is 80 cubic meters. It is controlled by the hydraulic cylinder of 4 diameter 1.27 meters with Marion's elbow movable bucket propulsion mechanism, and only two manual rods and two pedals are needed in the whole operation. The 4 main cable is about 7 cm in diameter, the total length is 914 meters, and the maximum excavation height is 42 meters. The walking device is 8 crawler with a length of 10.36 meters and a height of 2.44 meters, and the walking distance is 400 meters per hour. The silver shovel was decommissioned in April 2006, and some parts were put into the exhibition hall after the plan was dismantled.  The second 1950B type shovel was built in 1967, nicknamed GEM, running until 1988. In 1989, most of the parts were dismantled as scrap iron and a few as accessories for silver shovels. Compared with the silver shovel, the arm length is shorter, only 52 meters, but the bucket capacity is larger, reaching 99 cubic meters, and the other aspects are basically the same as the silver shovel.

The 1850B is used for the West Open-pit Mine in Kansas, nicknamed "BIG BRUTUS". Its work weight is 4990 tons, and its construction cost was $6 million 500 thousand when it was completed in 1962. It is driven by 7200V high voltage power, the maximum working current is 1200A, the main motor with 2 3550 horsepower, and 8 lift motor with 508 horsepower, control the bucket through 4 hydraulic cylinders, with the total power of 11165 horsepower (8200 kW). It needs 3 people to operate, the length of the boom is 46 meters, and the bucket capacity is 69 cubic meters. The walking mechanism consists of 4 groups of 8 crawlers, with a distance of 354 meters per hour. At present, BIG BRUTUS has become a scenic spot for a mine equipment exhibition in Kansas, which can be visited by tourists. This is much more luckier than the other super dismantling shovels.
