Six Key Points Of Safe Use And Maintenance Of Forklift Battery

Apr 24, 2022

Six key points of safe use and maintenance of forklift battery

1、 Daily inspection

1. Liquid level: if the liquid level is lower than the rated level, the service life of the battery will be shortened, and too little electrolyte will lead to heating and damage of the battery. Therefore, we must always pay attention to whether the electrolyte is sufficient.

2. Terminal, wire and cover: always check the corrosion caused by oxidation at the junction of battery terminal and the connection with wire, and check whether the cover is deformed and heated.

3. Appearance: the dirty surface of the battery will cause electric leakage. The surface of the battery should be clean and dry at any time.

2、 Maintenance

1. Add water: add distilled water according to the specified liquid level. Do not add too much distilled water in order to prolong the interval between adding water. Adding too much electrolyte will overflow and cause electric leakage.

2. Charging: the battery will produce gas during charging. Keep the charging place well ventilated and there is no open fire around. At the same time, the oxygen and acid gas generated during charging will affect the surrounding. Unplugging the charging plug during charging will produce an arc. Unplug the plug only after the charger is turned off. After charging, a lot of hydrogen remains around the battery, and no open fire is allowed. Open the cover plate on the battery for charging.

3. Maintenance of terminal, wire and cover: it must be carried out by professional technicians designated by the manufacturer.

4. Cleaning: if it is not too dirty, wipe it with a wet cloth. If it is very dirty, remove the battery from the vehicle and wash it with water to dry it naturally.

3、 Safekeeping

1. Storage place: it shall not be short circuited; Short circuit caused by rain may cause fire and a small amount of hydrogen. Therefore, the battery must be stored in a ventilated and cool place.

2. Waste battery: the waste battery still has electric energy and should be kept according to the storage method of the used battery.

4、 Operation of electrolyte

1. Check the specific gravity: check the specific gravity with a suction hydrometer. Don't let the electrolyte spill out during operation, and wear protective equipment.

2. Operations other than inspection: consult professional personnel, especially when replenishing electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid).

3. Electrolyte leakage: electrolyte leakage caused by overturning and damage of the battery shall be treated immediately (refer to emergency treatment items)

5、 End of life battery operation

1. Operation of end-of-life battery: when the battery is close to the end-of-life, the electrolyte in a single cell decreases very quickly, and distilled water should be supplemented every day.

2. Disposal of waste batteries: for waste batteries, extract the electrolyte and decompose the batteries. It can be discussed whether the battery manufacturer will recycle it.

6、 Emergency handling

1. Electrolyte splashing on skin: rinse with plenty of water

2. Electrolyte splashing on eyes: rinse with plenty of water and receive treatment from a professional doctor

3. Electrolyte splashing on clothes: take off clothes immediately, rinse with water and then rinse with weak alkaline soap.

4. Electrolyte leakage: when the electrolyte leaks to the outside, neutralize it immediately with lime, strong carbonated soda or carbonated soda, and wash it with a large amount of water.
